Founded in 2002 by Steel Morris, the Miracle League of Orange County, CA is a baseball league for children and adults with disabilities, and no child is turned away. Steel originally saw a special report on Bryant Gumbel’s HBO series “Real Sports” in 2001 about a Rotary Club in Conyers, GA that built the first-of-its-type ADA compliant baseball field. The show got Steel excited about trying to build a similar field in Orange County. Steel’s mother, Bonnie Morris, was a special education teacher for 20 years at Hope School in Anaheim, and he had been around her class and students for years. When Bonnie passed away suddenly in 2002 from a stroke, Steel knew he needed to make this field a reality. With his lifelong love of baseball and wanting to honor his mom’s service to the special needs community, he got to work. With the help of family and friends and after years of meetings with the Anaheim Angels/Los Angeles Angels, community leaders, city and county officials, service organizations, and potential donors, the great news broke. The Angels and Major League Baseball decided to build the field in 2010 as part of their All-Star Game community giving program. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held during All-Star week 2010, and the kids have had a permanent, safe place to play ever since.
